Stubborn Programs investigates a series of design problems that require fixed formal features in complicated site conditions. Here, a regulation (American) football field must coexist with the Colorado River.

Some say football is a religion in Texas. The pews become the stands and Friday night takes the place of Sunday morning when the happiness of a community is defined by the winning streak of the town's high school's team. To glorify the game, the stadium extends half way into the river, appearing to float on the water while shadowing the bridge into town. The end zone mass, broken from the shoreline topography, mimics the river dam like an anchored monument. The consistent river view and obscured field upon approach from the city builds anticipation, climaxing as fans descend the grand stairs of the north end zone, removing themselves from the distractions of the outside world in order to focus on the game. While the isolated field hovers like a stage a level above the water, the crowd circulates below, reconnecting to the river on the hypo-style deck. A similar condition exists at the street level in the grove - a small urban scale plaza for the town which connects the field to a series of classrooms and a ballroom, carved into the cliff side. The entire complex is lit with an impossibly thin halo of lights, circling above as a subtle reminder of the importance of the game to the community's bond.
