I designed and built this three door cabinet from African Mahogany and Bolivian Rosewood (Pau Ferro) as a way to accentuate wood’s natural variation in grain pattern. Because of the orientation of the boards, the hardwood panels were designed with expansion joints, which are revealed when the doors open. These joints allow for the wood’s natural movement, which increases with the thickness and species variation. Longitudinal supports were then attached to the panels with mechanical fasteners to allow for the gradual shifting over time. The seven legs are proportioned and placed to create character and emphasize the patterning in the overall design.
